Album Review: "Dominion of Misery" by Omnihility

Dominion of Misery
Technical Death Metal today.

I'm trying to figure out the difference between Technical Death Metal and Brutal Death Metal.

I really have no clue what razor thin line separates these two sub-genres of a sub-genre.

I'm sure it has something to do with what they sing about or how the vocals are just a touch different. Perhaps it's that the drums are slightly different in the mix?

I think of these sub-genres of death metal just as modern death metal. They could easily be thought of as the second generation of Carcass. As we all know, English Death Metal was legitimately different from Tampa Bay Death Metal right? Oh heavy metal sub-genres, I will always have something to say about you.

Omnihility
As near as I can tell, Omnihility is not a word but a mash up of other words.

We're not going to hold it against them that all of the outmoded, six syllable words for pain and suffering have already been taken.

This album feels like someone standing at the edge of two countries, and trying to decide which side to stand with.

The vocals are clearly of the new school, the modern death metal if you will.

They are computer sounding and never really changing. They are huge and angry. Therefore, I have no complaints.

The drums sound very strongly of Carcass, if Carcass were to come up today. So, picture Heartwork with triggers and an impressive tone. The only qualm I have here is when the trigged blast beats take effect, there are times when the guitars are drowned out a bit more than I'd like.

The guitars.

Now let's talk! There are several things the guitars do very well: Brutal Riffing. Nimble runs. Beautiful acoustic arpeggios. Long form solos. Modern and old school techniques are well displayed. They take time away from the Heavier Than Thou Arms Race to really groove, like the old days.

This band plays a very technical (haha) style of death metal, but with all of their technical abilities, they do not lose the groove. These songs are perfect for headbanging, because if you nod your head time with the beat, you're headbanging.
